The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). Our study of this chapter will isolate what troubled Daniel about the future. The revelation of the writing on the banquet hall wall, already described in chapter 5, actually happened later, on the last day of Belshazzars life. These saints are the believing Jews of the tribulation, not the believers of the Church Age. Both series of four kingdoms begin well and end badly. (13) In some sense, the last kingdom is still on-going. This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. First, the prophecies of Daniel are divinely inspired and revealed, and thus they are true and reliable. Rome did conquer much of the known world, but it never conquered the whole world as this is describing. 1. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so . Bob is a pastor/teacher and elder at Community Bible Chapel in Richardson, Texas, and has contributed many of his Bible study series for use by the Foundation. 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans 2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy 16 I approached one of those who were standing by and began asking him the exact meaning of all this. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar. (12) No distinction between the first coming of Christ and the second is made in the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. All distinctions of race and colour and nationality are stripped away and one apparently human figure represents the whole human race. Joyce C. Baldwin, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1978), p. 150. Are we supposed to discover their identity? One of those gaps is found in Daniel 7. 2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. Nebuchadnezzar died in 562 B.C., some 9 years before Belshazzars reign began. God stirred up the sea, and from its foaming, raging waters came forth four horrifying beasts. If you need one see me after the service and I will get you a copy. I kept looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man; a human mind also was given to it. Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him. Daniel 5 is an illustration and a prototype of what will happen in the end times, as described in the prophecy of Daniel 7. This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. In order to save Rose, Unity asks her to give up whatever makes her the dream vortex. No wonder interpreters differ about the details. But here in chapter 7, as in Psalm 80:17, the son of man is more than just a man, He is the Messiah. His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. Daniel returned to his house and explained the situation to his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. 13 And he performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. God is able to raise up kings and put them down. 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. Here is a man that has faithfully walked with his God his whole life. How interesting! Daniel 2: Nebuchadnezzar's Dream by Larry Murray King Nebuchadnezzar had a puzzling dream that no one could explainuntil God gave the interpretation to Daniel. And the high priest said to Him, I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus said to him, You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, AND COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN (Matthew 26:59-64). (3) This chapter contains the major segment of Daniel, which is primarily prophetic, although it does not contain the first prophecy in the Book of Daniel. During this ten-nation confederation another ruler will rise as described by the little horn. Lion - Babylon. He couldn't sleep. When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. The words of Daniel which applied to the beasts now found application to them. A person should not take credit for what God does through him. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. That dream was read as our Scripture reading this morning. Humanly speaking, it was impossible for them to have a child. So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. In Revelation it is also referred to as 42 months and 1260 days which all work out to 3 years. Should we be troubled as well? Because Daniel possessed wisdom bestowed by God and was conscientious in his work, he not only prospered during the reigns of successive rulers, but King Darius planned to put him in charge of the entire kingdom. 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. This morning we want to look at verses 15-28 and the interpretation of Daniels dream. (1) Why does Daniel indicate the historical setting of the vision he receives in chapter 7? He distinguishes himself by his ability to overcome the whole earth, crushing it under foot. The account of the writing on the wall and the death of Belshazzar (obviously the last year of his reign) is found in Daniel 5. Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. The angels went on to add that the saints of the Highest One will be given into Antichrists hand for a time, times, and half a time. They will serve and obey Him forever. God may choose to delay judgment on the wicked until their sin reaches full bloom; the possession of the land of Canaan would not happen in Abrahams lifetime, but more than 400 years later after the suffering of the people of God (see Genesis 15:12-17). 7 After this I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrifying and extremely strong; and it had large iron teeth. 10 If any one is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if any one kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation (1 Thessalonians 5:1-8). The visions explanation was not thorough enough to satisfy Daniel. We are in harmony with God when our declarations conform to his. In his vision, Daniel observed the sea being stirred up into a raging storm by the four winds of heaven. This signifies that the events which follow have been ordained by God. According to our text, the prophecies of Daniel 7 will not be fulfilled for a considerable period of time. So, I began the review by looking at the first 14 verses where Daniel gives us a summary of the visions he had as he dreamed in his sleep. Nevertheless, Daniel tells no one, keeping the matter to himself and suffering a quiet agony over the future events God has revealed to him. The last kingdom has at least eleven kings. He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. Daniel still dreaming said he approached one of those standing there. 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it. 3:15; Zc. The words of verse 1 point to the relationship between the prophecy Daniel received and its historical setting and context. What God says, He will do. In Ezekiel, and even in Daniel (8:17), it is used in reference to a prophet. Two weeks ago, after studying Revelation 13 and seeing how much it relates to Daniel 7 I decided we needed to go back and review Daniel 7 which we have not looked at since 2011. This fourth beast seems to regenerate in the form of subsequent kings and kingdoms. Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. They surely knew this text to be messianic, but they had always applied it to the Gentiles. Their perception is wrong, for suddenly and without warning their day of destruction will come upon them. The expression, son of man, is not new to Daniel nor to the Jews of his day. Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. Chapter 7 reveals in broad terms what the future holds. 9:1; 12:1, AV, RV), and the book of Daniel insists here and in subsequent chapters (8:27; 10:1, 10, 11, 15, 18) on the anxiety and psychological turmoil involved in receiving, even at Gods hand, understanding of the future course of history. Joyce C. Baldwin, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1978), p. 143. In addition to the beasts iron teeth, Daniel tells us that the beast had claws of bronze. Who are these saints that the angel is speaking of? Even those portions which we believe have been fulfilled, students of prophecy differ about the way of their fulfillment. Daniel urged them to pray for mercy from the God of heaven, . This designation refers to God the Father in a way that stresses His eternality, dignity, and power. For the time, it was these Jewish leaders who were beastly, arrogant, and blasphemous, and because of this they would suffer divine judgment. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, having added perfect humanity to His undiminished deity, He spoke of Himself very often as the Son of Man. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. Verses 15-28 contain the divine interpretation of this vision. The angel says the Antichrist will seek to make alterations in times and in law. I believe some in Babylon, like their king, came to a genuine faith in God. It may seem to them that their defeat is certain and that their hopes of entering into the eternal kingdom are lost. Chapter 9, on the other hand, has a historical account of Daniels study of Jeremiah and of his prayers of repentance and petition for Israels restoration and return to the land of promise. Old Babylonian Omen Text (VAT 7525) In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. Remembering this avoids confusion. Before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, four earthly kingdoms will rise and fall. The saints of the Highest One are given all the kingdoms of the earth for an everlasting kingdom. 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 28 At this point the revelation ended. While most prophecies in the Bible reveal events which will take place after the death of the recipient of the prophecy, the prophecy is revealed for impact upon those to whom it was revealed. The three ribs may also represent the kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon which preceded the Medo-Persian empire and then fell to them. Those who populate the earth after the tribulation will give their allegiance to Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. Daniel said the king's dream was about a giant statue that was destroyed by a stone cut out of a mountain. He had lived through the overthrow of his people, his nation, and his hometown by a foreign power, he had been torn from his family and carried off into captivity. [4] We of the present Age, the church will reign with Jesus Christ as His bride. However, the Son of Man must first suffer at the hands of men (17:22; 20:18). The horn of the beast that made war against the saints was one of 10 kings who prevailed until the Ancient of days came and judged against him in favor of the saints. Daniel explains that each of these metals represents a kingdom that would rule the world, and the stone is God . No wonder His words stung and prompted them to act as they did. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. When the child is born, the pains of suffering are quickly lost in the joys of seeing a new life. Both sets of kingdoms are brought to a sudden end and are replaced by an eternal kingdom. Belshazzars rise to power and ascent to the throne seems to have inaugurated a new age for Babylon. Chapter 2 contains a very significant prophecy, revealed by God to king Nebuchadnezzar. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. 2 Daniel said, I was looking in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. The First Vision is a dream of the king that is interpreted by Daniel. Gogglebox star Stephen explained the reason for him and husband Daniel Lustif missing the show on Instagram. In fact, Daniel has trouble interpreting some of his own dreams. Did Daniel interpret dreams? The wicked will prosper and appear to get away with their opposition toward God and His saints. 5. 10 A river of fire was flowing And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court sat, and the books were opened. Daniel was exiled to Babylon when he was still a teenager. Our deliverance from the power of sin and the penalty of death has been accomplished by our Lord, who suffered in our place. When that day comes for them, it is too late to repent. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. "He's home just in time for #gogglebox we are not on this week as Daniels been away . Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. 77 According to Baldwin, This verse [13] has been the subject of more scholarly papers than any other in the book, so indicating its centrality, not only for Daniel but for the New Testament also. Baldwin, p. 142. During the times of the Gentiles four empires, Daniel was told, would rise and rule over the land and people of Israel. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things: These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. Dwight Pentecost writes, The existence of the church in the present Age was nowhere revealed in the Old Testament. See John F. Walvoord, Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation (Chicago: Moody Press, 1971), p. 149. The beast was lifted up and made to stand like a man. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [3]Walvoord, John F.; Zuck, Roy B.; Dallas Theological Seminary: The Bible Knowledge Commentary : An Exposition of the Scriptures. (7) Who is the Ancient of Days? The scene of the four beasts arising from the sea, which Daniel saw in his night vision, is strikingly similar to the account found in the 13th chapter of Revelation: 1 And he stood on the sand of the seashore, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. The first recorded vision comes to Daniel in the form of a night vision, like those of Nebuchadnezzar (2:1; 4:5) during the first year of the reign of Belshazzar. Verse 2. He will also send forth His angels to gather those who do not belong in His kingdom (12:41). (1) Prophecy is necessary because God has chosen to settle His accounts with men slowly. Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i More, The Net Pastors Journal, Eng. I have heard a number of attempts to explain the gaps in Old Testament prophecy. There is fairly strong inferential evidence that Nebuchadnezzar was represented by the first beast, the winged lion. This angel responded and gave Daniel understanding into his dream as he interpreted it for him. Verses 1-14 contain the vision which God gave to Daniel. The king is told that all of these earthly kingdoms would be destroyed by the stone not fashioned by human hands, and that an eternal kingdom would take the place of these temporal kingdoms. Old Testament Jews would likely regard the reference to the Son of Man in Daniel 7 as a reference to the Messiah, although they would probably not understand Him to be both divine and human. Daniel writes that at this point the revelation was ended. A look through the Scriptures shows that Daniels response to the prophecies he received was not unique. We will deal with the meaning and application of Daniels vision later on in our questions and answers. (3) The finest commentary on the prophecy of Daniel 7 comes from our Lord Himself. Prophecy is not a pep rally, which generates a great burst of short-term enthusiasm but does little to inspire faith and endurance in the midst of suffering. In Daniels dream the Greek empire and Alexander the great were represented by the four-headed, four-winged leopard. (5) Above all, the prophecy in this chapter means precisely what God says it means in this text, nothing more and nothing less. Subsequent revelations in the Book of Daniel which Daniel received were closely associated with some kind of agony or distress (see 8:17, 27; 9:20-21; 10:2-3, 7-10, 17; 12:8). The identity of the kingdoms represented by the other body parts and metals was not revealed. Now, in verse 23, the angelic interpreter explains the relationship of the boastful beast and the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. 1. The third portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the belly and thighs of bronze which represented the Greek empire. (11) What is the point of the vision? She makes it clear in a rather public fashion that she finds him desirable. They are far from pleasant but an unavoidable part of the process. It's build upon the passage in Daniel 7 where he has a disturbing dream. The fourth beast receives greater attention and is of the most interest to Daniel. Before the coming of Christ, who would? These kingdoms go from bad to worse. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. Generally, it is agreed that this beast represents the Babylonian empire and king Nebuchadnezzar in particular. These both represent Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian empire. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. The horn continues to sound off while the court is being set up for judgment. God will establish His kingdom, and that kingdom, unlike the kingdoms of men, is eternal. This part of Daniels dream is new information that was not conveyed in Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter two. He questioned His disciples so that they could confess that He, the Son of Man, was the Messiah (16:13f.). It is virtually the opposite of the term beast. The expression, Son of man, is not new to Daniel. Daniels first inner turmoil occurs in chapter 7. Daniel 2:26-49 As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself.. In a similar way, Belshazzar becomes blasphemous and is suddenly removed by God for his wickedness. Daniel explained to the king that the statue represented four successive kingdoms based upon power and wealth, beginning with Babylon, while the stone and mountain signified a kingdom established by God that would never be destroyed nor given to other people. The timeline reads as follows: 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. Our text challenges such a conclusion, and later prophecies in Daniel further document that the coming of the King and of the kingdom will be some time further in the future. And yet God said they would. They believed that the Messiah would come to establish the kingdom, to bless the Jews and to condemn the Gentiles. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed. The blasphemous horn of Daniel 7, which goes so far as to oppose the people of God, is suddenly taken by death, and his kingdom is removed. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. Open your Bibles to Daniel 7. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him." Daniel described the beast as having iron teeth and that it devours, crushes, and tramples under its feet all that stands in its way. The saints should expect to suffer because of their faith, especially as the last days for the kingdoms of men draw near. This description certainly fits the account of Nebuchadnezzars plunge from power and sanity in chapter 4. The final words of verse 25 are carefully chosen to let the reader know that while this king appears to be successfully opposing God, all he does is a part of the divine plan for the last days. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [7]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. In Daniels dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. What so upset Daniel about the future? In more detail, the outline would be as follows: (2) The Divine Interpretation verses 15-28. Daniel's Dream is instantly appealing as you can reallyrelate to how Daniel is feeling. (Numbers 23:19). Salvation is likewise a process involving sufferingand then glory. Liberals reject all prophecies, because they require a sovereign God and a miraculous revelation of future events. Each of the four beasts represent a king and thus a resulting kingdom. Passing over the first three beasts, his questions focus on the last beast. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints (Revelation 13:1-10). Public sentiment was turning against this foreign religion, and the Babylonians, including Belshazzar, wanted a return to their old time religion the pagan worship of the gods of Babylon. This horn is called by different names in the New Testament: In 2 Thessalonians 2:3 the little horn is called the man of lawlessness. Revelation 13:1-2 calls the little horn the beast. The name he is best known by in found in 1 John 2:18-24 where John calls the little horn the Antichrist.. The first beast was lion-like, with wings like that of an eagle.79 Its wings were plucked from it; if this happened in mid-air, he must have plummeted to the ground. The three ribs in the bears mouth between its teeth most likely represent Babylon, Egypt, and Lydia, three empires conquered by the Medo-Persian empire. If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. 4:19; Ezk. The vision plays on before Daniel, almost as though in answer to his desire to know more. When mentioning the little horn that grew up and uprooted three of the first ten horns, Daniel now tells us that this little horn grew until it was larger in appearance then the remaining seven horns. As Daniel continues to watch, another horn emerges, as three of the other horns are plucked out by the roots to make room for it. Lets pray and ask God to teach us and guide us as we look at His prophetic word. When the iniquity of the blasphemous horn reaches full bloom and his appointed time to rule is fulfilled, God will destroy him, casting his body into the fire. The first time in Daniel 7:13, he is referring to Messiah, who will sit on the eternal throne of His father, David. In other words, this persecution of the saints will not go on unchecked but will be defined to a definite period of time.
